Description
Leipzig Zoo is one of Germany’s most progressive zoological parks, located in the heart of Leipzig and recognised internationally for its groundbreaking approach to habitat design and visitor engagement. The zoo is home to approximately 850 species and more than 8,500 animals, set within expansive naturalistic environments that allow animals to exhibit natural behaviours. Its most celebrated feature is Gondwanaland, a vast indoor tropical hall covering 16,500 square metres that replicates a rainforest ecosystem, housing diverse species from Asia, Africa, and South America within a climate-controlled environment. The zoo also features Pongoland, one of the world’s leading research and living facilities for great apes, developed in partnership with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology. Leipzig Zoo is actively engaged in conservation, supporting numerous international field projects and breeding programmes for endangered species. Its strong emphasis on sustainability, scientific research, and environmental education makes it a model for modern zoological institutions. A programme of continuous development ensures that Leipzig Zoo remains at the forefront of zoology in Europe.
