Description
National Zoological Park Delhi, commonly known as Delhi Zoo, is one of the largest and most prominent zoological parks in India, located adjacent to the historic Purana Qila in the heart of New Delhi. Spanning over 80 hectares, the zoo is home to more than 1,300 animals representing around 130 species, including Bengal tigers, Indian rhinoceroses, hippopotamuses, African lions, Aldabra giant tortoises, and a rich diversity of native Indian wildlife. The park is managed by the Central Zoo Authority under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change, and follows national standards for animal welfare and conservation. Its spacious enclosures are set within mature woodland, providing a pleasant natural environment for both animals and visitors. Delhi Zoo participates in breeding programmes for endangered species and serves as an important centre for environmental education, attracting large numbers of school groups each year. The park’s combination of historical surroundings, diverse wildlife, and accessible location in the capital makes it one of the most significant zoological institutions in South Asia. It continues to develop its facilities and conservation programmes in line with modern standards.
