Description
Singapore Zoo is one of the most admired zoological parks in the world, located within the Mandai wildlife precinct in northern Singapore. Known internationally for its pioneering open-concept design, the zoo replaced conventional caging with naturalistic, free-ranging habitats separated from visitors by dry and wet moats, streams, and carefully designed landscapes. This approach, adopted since its opening in 1973, has made Singapore Zoo a benchmark for animal welfare and immersive zoo design globally. The zoo is home to more than 300 species and over 2,800 animals, with particular strength in its collection of orangutans, pygmy hippos, giant pandas, and a spectacular range of rainforest wildlife. Situated in a lush tropical rainforest setting, the zoo offers a uniquely atmospheric experience that is rare among urban zoological institutions. Singapore Zoo is part of Mandai Wildlife Group, which also operates Night Safari, River Wonders, and Bird Paradise, forming one of the world’s most comprehensive wildlife complexes. It actively participates in international conservation and breeding programmes and has won numerous international awards for excellence in zoo management and environmental education.
