Description

Smithsonian National Zoo, officially the Smithsonian’s National Zoological Park, is one of the most visited and scientifically respected zoological institutions in the United States, located in Rock Creek Park in Washington DC. Operated by the Smithsonian Institution and funded in part by the US Congress, the zoo offers free admission to all visitors, making it one of the most accessible major zoos in the world. The zoo is home to approximately 2,700 animals representing around 390 species, including giant pandas — one of the zoo’s most beloved long-term attractions — as well as Asian elephants, cheetahs, clouded leopards, and a rich diversity of birds and reptiles. The Smithsonian Conservation Biology Institute, affiliated with the zoo, conducts leading research into wildlife conservation, reproduction, and disease, with field programmes operating across the globe. Exhibits are designed to replicate natural habitats, and extensive educational programmes serve schools, families, and researchers year-round. The zoo’s commitment to science, public access, and conservation advocacy makes it a cornerstone of American zoology and a model for publicly funded wildlife institutions worldwide.
