Description

Zoorasia, officially the Yokohama Zoological Gardens, is a modern zoological park located in the Asahi ward of Yokohama, Japan. Opened in 1999, the zoo was designed from the outset with a progressive philosophy centred on naturalistic habitat design, animal behavioural enrichment, and environmental education. The zoo covers 53.3 hectares and is home to approximately 2,600 animals representing around 200 species, including Sumatran orangutans, Okapis, Amur leopards, Komodo dragons, and a diverse range of birds and reptiles. The park is organised into eight themed biogeographic zones representing different world regions including Africa, Eurasia, Oceania, and Japan, allowing visitors to understand the ecological context of each animal they encounter. Zoorasia participates in international conservation programmes and breeding initiatives for endangered species, contributing to global efforts to prevent wildlife extinction. Its collaboration with Yokohama city authorities and academic institutions supports ongoing research. The zoo’s spacious, carefully landscaped habitats and commitment to the highest standards of animal welfare make it one of the most respected modern zoos in Japan, offering a rewarding and educational experience for visitors of all ages.
