Description

Chiang Mai Zoo is the principal zoological park of northern Thailand, situated at the base of Doi Suthep mountain on the western edge of Chiang Mai city. Originally established by American missionary Harold Mason Young in the 1950s, the zoo was taken over by the Zoological Park Organization of Thailand in 1977 and has since expanded to cover approximately 81 hectares of natural forest terrain. The zoo houses more than 400 animal species, including Indochinese tigers, Malayan sun bears, orangutans, hippopotamuses, and a variety of reptiles and birds. A notable feature is its large aquarium complex, which includes one of the longest underwater acrylic tunnels in the world at 133 metres, housing freshwater and marine species from the Mekong River region. The zoo’s elevated and forested setting provides a naturally scenic backdrop that distinguishes it from flat urban zoos. Educational programmes and guided experiences support the zoo’s conservation mission. Tram services help visitors navigate the hilly terrain. Chiang Mai Zoo is a significant wildlife and educational attraction in Thailand’s north and a popular destination for both local residents and international visitors.
