Description
Melbourne Zoo is Australia’s oldest zoological park, founded in 1862 and located in Royal Park, just minutes from the city centre. Operated by Zoos Victoria, it is the flagship institution of a network of four zoological parks dedicated to fighting wildlife extinction. The zoo is home to more than 300 species and approximately 3,000 animals, including iconic Australian wildlife such as koalas, wombats, and platypuses, as well as gorillas, elephants, big cats, and a rich diversity of bird species. Its exhibits are carefully designed to provide naturalistic environments that support animal welfare while offering visitors immersive and educational experiences. Melbourne Zoo participates in numerous breeding programmes for threatened species and supports field conservation projects in Australia and internationally. The zoo’s conservation commitment is underpinned by its Zoos Victoria Fighting Extinction programme, which focuses on saving species at risk of disappearing from the wild. Educational activities, keeper talks, and interactive exhibits engage visitors of all ages. Melbourne Zoo is a world-class facility that combines historical significance, scientific purpose, and a rich visitor experience in one of Australia’s most liveable cities.
