Description
Zoo Negara, Malaysia’s national zoological park, is located approximately 13 kilometres north of Kuala Lumpur in the state of Selangor. Founded in 1963, the zoo covers 110 acres of tropical landscape and is home to more than 5,000 animals representing approximately 476 species, including a rich collection of Southeast Asian fauna such as Malayan tigers, orangutans, tapirs, pygmy elephants, and sun bears. Zoo Negara is perhaps best known internationally for its giant panda conservation programme, housing giant pandas on loan from China as part of a bilateral partnership, and achieving successful breeding milestones. The zoo is managed by the Malaysian Zoological Society and participates in national and international species survival programmes for endangered wildlife. Its natural tropical forest setting provides an authentic environment that supports both animal welfare and visitor immersion. Educational facilities, keeper demonstrations, and interactive programmes make it a popular destination for school groups and families from across Malaysia and the wider region. Zoo Negara continues to invest in habitat improvements and conservation initiatives, maintaining its role as Southeast Asia’s leading national zoological institution.
